AprAuto Dealers Urge Gov't To Scrap Obnoxious Port Taxes
The Government of Ghana have been urged by car dealers to scrap over 20 taxes currently at the Port. The Vehicles and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana(VADUG) say they are fed up with the numerous financial commitments they need to fulfill before they are able to clear their goods.
The Union have cited taxes such as Import Duty, Import VAT, Ghana Health Service Disinfection Fee, the Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy, Vehicle Examination Fees and the African Union import Levy among other taxes as unnecessary and overly expensive.
Mr. Frank Atanley Kofigah, the executive secretary of VADUG, in an interview with citinewsroom.com, lamented the stress car dealers are grappling with.
“If you’re a customer clearing a vehicle at the port, be prepared to pay over twenty different fees,” Mr. Kofigah pointed out.
“Now when you go in there, we have the GHS Disinfection Fee and the Special Import Levy. That 2% levy—what is it even doing there? It was meant for a specific purpose. Is that purpose still relevant? We need to interrogate these charges.”
